Who this pathway is for

Remote workers and service providers earning qualifying income from outside Costa Rica: at least US$3,000 monthly alone, or US$4,000 with qualifying dependents.

Key requirements

• Bank statements and supporting declaration or accepted certification demonstrating the qualifying income for the previous year.
• Valid passport, application, applicable entry visa and government-payment proof.
• Spanish translations and any required apostille or legalization.
• Medical insurance for the entire authorized stay, with at least US$50,000 coverage; dependents also need cover.

What this pathway offers

• An initial one-year stay, with one additional year available if renewal conditions are met.
• A specific permission for qualifying foreign remote work.
• Eligible dependents can apply with the principal applicant.

Important limitations

• This is a non-resident estancia, not temporary residency.
• It does not authorize employment by Costa Rican businesses or services to local clients under this program.
• A later residence application is a separate process with separate requirements.

How the process generally works

• Confirm the correct category and current checklist for your circumstances.
• Prepare the evidence, legalizations and Spanish translations required for your case.
• Submit through the applicable consulate or DGME procedure and respond to requests.
• After approval, complete the documentation and insurance steps in the resolution.

Renewal & longer-term planning

Law 10008, Article 15, requires at least 180 days in Costa Rica in the first year for renewal, plus continued qualifying income and insurance. Confirm the current DGME implementation before planning travel.

Fees & budgeting

The official requirements list a US$100 government application payment. Documentation, insurance, banking and professional costs are additional and should be itemized.
